Materia Medica

Materia Medica (English: medical material/substance) is a Latin medical term used for the body of collected knowledge about the therapeutic properties of any substance used for healing (i.e., medicines). Homoeopathic Materia Medica are encyclopedia of materials which may be used to prepare homoeopathic medicines. They list the materials along with details of the provings which establish the symptoms and conditions for which they are claimed to be suitable. They thus constitute a homoeopathic prescribing reference guide and are often used along with the Homoeopathic repertory.

Although there are various homoeopathic Materia Medica, written by different authors and covering different specialities, the term Homoeopathic Materia Medica is often used to refer the total sum of homoeopathic preparations and prescribing options. Hahnemann developed the first Homoeopathic Materia Medica by a system of homeopathic provings, where a substance was ingested by the "prover" and the symptoms that the "prover" developed were recorded in great detail. Materia Medica may also include accidental poisoning and some information from clinical treatment.

    Lectures on HOMOEOPATHIC MATERIA MEDICA

The first edition of James Tyler Kents Lectures on Homoeopathic Materia Medica was published in 1905. Kent felt that the speech of layman presents all sickness to the physicians mind, hence materia medica must be reduced from technicalities to simple speech of the patient. By presenting every remedys strong characteristics, Kent shows how the materia medica is evolved and used. This is one of the first instances where a remedy picture is portrayed. Here are 217 remedies from the pen of one of the most influential American homeopaths. These are the transcribed lectures from Kents classes at the Post Graduate School of Homeopaths in Philadelphia. Though not a primary materia medica, there are wonderful gems to be found within. Witness the distinctive picture of the sycotic miasm within the context of the remedy, Natrum sulphuricum. The colloquial presentation leads to an easier grasp of the information. The lectures are in simple form, explaining Kents plan of study for each remedy.
