BOOK REVIEW OF “A STUDY OF HAHNEMANN’S ORGANON OF MEDICINE” “There is more treasure in books than in all the pirates’ loot on Treasure Island…” Walt Disney This quote is ever more fitting to our master Dr Hahnemann’s Organon of Medicine. Every time a reader dives into this book, he shall never return without a pearl. But understanding the Organon of Medicine in its true spirit could be difficult for the budding students of Homoeopathy. Though Hahnemann’s writing is perfect, beginners feel overwhelmed due to the condensed writing style of his times. This is where the book “A Study of Hahnemann’s Organon of Medicine” comes to the rescue, for all the zealous students of Organon. “A Study of Hahnemann’s Organon of Medicine” is a book written by Dr Mahendra Pal Arya M.D.(Hom). This book is based on the sixth edition of Organon of Medicine. He being a veteran teacher of Homoeopathy has clearly understood the difficulties that students face while reading Organon of Medicine. The author has attempted to present the Organon of Medicine lucidly and attractively but more importantly without skewing the ideas of Hahnemann. PRESENTATION STYLE: The layout and presentation of this book might look simple but proves to be undoubtedly beneficial. The unique layout and well-sized fonts add up to the pleasure of reading. Certain aphorisms in the Organon of Medicine might be mind-boggling for a newbie. Reading the same phrase with proper punctuation and intonations will make us understand the meaning in a better way. In this regard, Dr M P Arya has taken pains to rephrase, simplify, rearrange and note down each word or sentence in the paragraphs or aphorisms with punctuation and intonation. This well-structured breakdown of sentences renders the assimilation of the essence of Organon more effective. In Addition to this, the author has given additional explanations to selected aphorisms where detailing is truly necessary. CONSTRUCTION OF THE BOOK: This 722 pages book has the following sections, Introduction of Organon. Aphorisms with Author’s commentary and space for readers to take notes. Appendix – containing four essays – three by Hahnemann and one by the author. Introduction part – The original text is presented in 11 Sub-sections. The main text is re-organized neatly with bullets. The footnotes are presented in separate boxes and are numbered serially. This makes reading comfortable and aids for easy reference. Aphorisms Section – It is presented in the following format - Aphorisms from Organon. - Footnotes in separate boxes and serially numbered. - Author’s Comments on the Aphorism. Additional explanations for certain aphorisms are given in Boxes (without numbering, to differentiate from F.N.). - Personal Notes – A Space for the reader to add notes. To quote, the following is an excerpt from the commentary under aphorism 1. The sole mission of the physician is to restore lost health, to cure. Not to construct theoretical systems nor to attempt to explain phenomena. The physician's highest mission, his only mission, is to make sick person again healthy, to cure him, as it is called… In another section, Dr M P Arya explains Acute Diseases as Rapidly developing abnormal bodily functions due to the deranged vital principle, which have a tendency to run more or less a rapid course and have a limited span. Appendix Section – The author has included three important essays written by Dr Hahnemann, including the precursors of Organon. The last essay “The Story of the Sixth Edition of Organon” is interesting and highly informative. Other Sections – The book also features a special section “About the sixth edition of Organon” which gives a general overview of the textbook of Organon. A comprehensive Ground plan of Organon in the form of a Flow chart is given in this section. Also under the “Contents” section, a single-line description of each Aphorism is given which serves the dual purpose of page identification and also a quick last-minute revision tool. “The Personal Notes” space after each aphorism enables the readers to pen down their own notes comfortably without having to purchase another note book. “No more scribbling in between the lines in the Organon text book. You have your own space now!” CONCLUSION: Though there are many guides available for Organon of Medicine, this book is highly unique for its simplistic commentary, uncomplicated layout and accurate explanations. This book is rightly recommended as a reference book by the NCH for the subject of Organon of Medicine. For those Homoeopaths who wish to acquire the pearls of Organon in its true depth, this book will be a dependable companion. Happy reading!
